Frequently Asked Questions

What do I need to provide?

Generally, you do not need to provide anything except the student, and a notebook and marker for them to write. Occasionally, I may ask you to print something. For in-person tutoring, the student should come with any relevant homework or materials.

How often will you meet with my child?

In most cases, I recommend twice weekly for one hour, but we will decide together if this is appropriate in your case.

What technology is needed?

For Zoom, a laptop or desktop computer is optimal. It is helpful to have a set of headphones with a microphone, and a mouse (not just a touchpad).

I'm not good with computers. Will this work for me?

Absolutely! Most of the parents I deal with are not confident with technology, but it is all quite simple. If there are any troubles getting set up, I will help. Once we are set up, your child just has to click a link for every session.

What type of space is needed for tutoring?
How soon will I see results?

A quiet space with minimal distractions is ideal for your child to work. It is helpful to keep pets and other children out of the room.  Snacks and toys should not be present. For some students, a fidget toy can be helpful.

Will my child be safe online?

Yes. I take this very seriously, and have completed a workshop in Professional Boundaries for Teachers. I ask that students work in the same room or an adjacent room to an adult. If you wish, sessions may be recorded to ensure safety. I encourage you to review the Canada Safety Council's Online Safety Rules with your child.

Tutoring is not a silver bullet. It takes consistency and time. Some things may improve instantly, and others may take longer. Tutoring works best when you and I work together, and there is daily practice at home.

What if I can't afford tutoring?

I offer a sliding scale. A good education should be available to everyone. Please let me know if tutoring would be a financial hardship for you, and we will work it out.

During the lockdown Robin was able to continue tutoring using an online format. This helped all of us navigate the online learning that the school board implemented.  Robin is a knowledgeable, kind and delightful person to work with and we would recommend her to anyone looking for a tutor.
